A corporate environment is at its best when it consists of a workforce with varied backgrounds and qualities and makes a conscious effort to embrace these differences. Such differences may include: race, age, gender identity, marital status, sexual orientation, religion and level of physical ability. An employment diversity specialist is an individual whose role is to ensure that companies are sensitive to the differences of the employees and consistently promotes acceptance.
Serving as a liason between the workforce and the company, the employment diversity specialist aids in the compliance of laws against discrimination. With its growing importance in the workplace, an employment diversity specialist is an asset to any company and increases the ability of an organization to compete on a global scale. More companies have begun to realize the value of having this specialist onboard to provide effective training, development, supervision and dialog amongst employees. Employment diversity specialists are generally considered Human Resource (HR) professionals and often have earned a degree in business administration, human resources or other related area of study. Colleges that do not offer specific diversity degrees may provide specialized graduate level work or certifications in the field. Candidates in this field should have exceptional levels of skill in communication (written and oral), training, problem solving and strong computer knowledge in order to manage an HR system. Additionally important is thorough knowledge of affirmative action and equal employment opportunity laws, as well as numerous other federal and state regulations.
